Dear Phil Gaskin,
I am writing to you in your role as the Labour Party South West regional director as a concerned party member (if you have a role in the party please mention that here).
In the recent South West Metro Mayor selection process a shortlist was produced which only contained two names. The previous candidate, Lesley Mansell, who received the most CLP nominations was not shortlisted neither were two previous parliamentary candidates, despite getting more CLP nominations than Dan Norris who was shortlisted. I am struggling to think of process that would mean a previous metro mayoral candidate and two PPCs would be deemed unsuitable for shortlisting, despite clear democratic support. The narrowing down of candidates to two with the removal of so many popular and highly qualified individuals reeks of political manoeuvring. To me it gives the impression that the South West regional committee hold member democracy in contempt. I am hoping that you can show me that this is not the case.
I have a couple of requests to try to gain a clear understanding of the selection process. Specifically I would like to know:
- The full selection criteria
- A full breakdown of the nominations for each candidate
I am expecting a prompt response (within 5 working days). If I do not receive a satisfactory response that puts to rest my fears I will be forced to raise an official complaint.
Thank you in advance for your prompt response. I am eager to have this matter settled.
